As far as I know, convex hull computation uses exact predicates and I guess it is slow because of this (but not awfully slow as your email seems to suggest). It does work sometimes (but not always) just with Cartesian<double> but you have to superimpose that with the exact predicates. Moreover, it works fine with double and not restricted just to Homogeneous types. Hope this clarifies your concerns.
