I've been looking and experimenting with trying to find a mesh simplification tool to use on basically flood filled ground representations of a 3d map. I flood fill the environment with small grid cells and would like to take the resulting mesh and simplify it, preserving boundaries. I've attempted to run one of my output .off files through the example Surface_mesh_simplification but it always fails some CGAL_precondition checks and bombs out. Anyone know of a simplification algorithm for what is basically a tessellated floor plan of an indoor environment made up of interconnected quads that were the result of a flood fill through the environment? It's not a closed mesh, and may have holes.
Any help is appreciated. I can provide an example .off file if anyone is interested.
