Hi,

Ben, how can you feel comfortable talking with someone over the mail, that you don't know him that much, and everyone needs to get your correspondence and you need to think twice before sending something?

Perhaps I should not feel comfortable in that situation. I suppose my answer is this: a mailing list has to have some standard for what is discussed, in what form, etc., just as a forum would, and just as an open source community must, as a whole. I can only hope that I have correctly guessed the community standards, or that if I have not, that someone representative of the community would email me off list and correct my behavior.

Don't you think Efi's and yours last correspondence on a bug in the arrangement should long ago have moved to a private email between you two, or as a dedicated topic in a forum which only the ones who are interested would go inside the topic and get updated?

Private mail: quite possibly. Dedicated topic...to me, having a fairly specific title (in this case, the class in question and the nature of the activity) makes filtering easy, but this is just my opinion.

If you don't like forum, avatar, searching each person posts, know how serious he is, I think at least you should move to newsgroups to get the messages organized in a tree inside your client.

The point of my original reply is _not_ to argue that mailing lists are better than forums. Rather it was to argue that mailing lists are better than forums for me personally, which was really meant to make the general point that different users have different preferences for how they participate in group discussions.

I cannot claim that mailing lists are better than forums for you - it would be crazy for me to tell you what you like - and from your response it sounds like your frustration at having all mail 'pushed' is a fundamental flaw in mailing lists for you.

Either way the people who administer the CGAL user community will have to make a decision on how to best run a discussion group, and it won't please everybody.

cheers
Ben
