the Debian package and the backports to older releases are provided by
me. I am not aware of Ubuntu backports.

What Ubuntu release are you using? Lucid Lynx has 3.5.1-1, older
releases have 3.4 or older. The squeeze or sid package might work with
your Ubuntu release. It's worth a try.
