Dear Ed,
in addition to Emmanuel mail's, it would also be interesting to have a
comparison with a version just before the change in the renumber stuff,
for example commit 122e3868a1ff024da7405206a5859cdb5db05f44 from May 21st.
You forgot to mention that you got a nice speedup in the merge step,
should this be considered as a bug too?
