For your needs, LEDA is another option.

I had similar experiences. To my interests, CORE can be 70 times slower
than double.

If you are new to CORE, try to start from reading CORE Library Tutorial,
there they actually explained the trade off of accuracy and inefficiency;
how to speed up CORE; and stack overflow (stuck.. in your words).

If you are using CGAL, try use filtered_kernel.

And always try to optimize your code.
