Hi Efi.
Yeah - I guess I need either to bit-stream the true MP numbers, or...apply a transformation that reduces the precision of all numbers to what double-precision floating point can handle, in a topologically safe way. I looked at snap-rounding, but it looks to me like it would be non-trivial to reconstruct face features from a snap-rounded arrangement.

If I understand the question, then it boild down to how ro export and import numbers represented with the number type you are using, and that, of course, depends on the number type. Gmpq supports exposrting to and importing from an io-stream.
