Thanks for everything, Bernd. I have something in mind that is inspired
from your advice, but may use the CGAL fitting after all.

I forgot to answer the latter: no, CGAL can't do this kind of fitting.
If the input shape is not ellipsoidal, it's not even clear to me what
"hat-like manner" is supposed to mean.
