No, one can use the C API directly.

It's enabled by default unless your compiler does not support it. See
config.log for the details.

examples/basic_examples contains an example, as well as the
documentation.

mpi/examples/stencil/ contains a basic stencil examples, and the
documentation explains it. Note that StarPU currently doesn't balance
the load between MPI nodes, it is up to the application to decide the
data/task distribution.
