Here are my findings: 

The CMake build script adds a linker flag called "-no_compact_unwind" when
building the examples. Apparently, adding that one to my personal build
setup solves this particular issue with the uncaught exception. 

I had another minor issue afterwards, receiving "malloc: *** error for
object 0x101b00ee0: pointer being freed was not allocated" runtime error
somewhere in the CGAL call, but I could fix this by removing the linker
option "-mmacosx-version-min=10.5", which was added automatically by qmake.
