you don't need that much disk space (maybe if want to build *all* examples).
Important is the RAM size (but you could setup a swap file/partition).

The examples inherit the compiler flags from the library. I think bulding in
debug mode needs less memory than optimized mode. Did you build the library in
optimized mode? You could try buildind the library in debug mode, or edit
CGALConfig.cmake after you built the library.

If you are using the .deb packages, the file CGALConfig.cmake is in 
/usr/lib/CGAL.
