hello. i would like to mention that this question is often raised on the coq
list (see the coq archives). in the CoLoR library (http://color.loria.fr/), we
use vectors instead of lists for defining first-order algebraic terms with
function symbols of fixed arity. we also had to redefine/prove the mentioned
more general induction principles. see the file Term/WithArity/ATerm.v.
